Go Ask Alice

So I'm almost 99.9% sure I had read this book in like 4th grade lol but I don't think I really understood it too well. I was at a garage sale and it was a quarter and felt the need to bring it home with me. Apparently this book is a real diary. There is no author it under "Anonymous" and no where in the book do they use the name Alice except when the girl says she feels like Alice in Wonderland and there is another girl named Alice mentioned once. This book came out in the 1970's and there has been so much controversy since then. Some city and states have banned the book from being sold, people feel that it's not 100% true. An editor came fourth and claimed she added/deleted a few etc. ANYWAY.....
This is about a 15 year old girl who starts off having typical teenage issues...boys, parents, friends, school. Well when she goes to spend a summer at her grandmothers house she gets introduced to drugs. She seems pretty honest in the story very naive and innocent. Very how would you say? Teenage lol. Some parts are to swallow she runs away more than once gets mixed up with the wrong people, but you can see that she really wants to be a good girl. Well anyway the part that gave me chills was actually the epilogue. I would recommend this for a quick read. Less than 200 pages took me a day and a half. I guess it would have been more impacting if I had read it when I was in High School. Now at 24 I've read and dealt with first hand and my own clients with much more ummm worse situations? I give it 3.5 stars but like I said it worth the read if you have a few hours to kill or if your in High School you might know someone just like Alice. Has anybody else read this? Planning on it?

P.S. I Love You by Cecelia Ahern

This book was GOOD! 5 stars from me!
Plot: Holly's husband Gerry dies from a tumor very young, but before he died he wrote Holly a small note each month with some sort of fun, life living task to do which will help her get back on her feet and just learn how to live again without him.
There are some parts I seriously had to put the book down for a second. It was so sad to read about how she felt, how she loved this man so much, she married him because she wanted to spend the rest of her life with him and now he's gone. and there was not one thing she could do about it. some parts are hilarious some sad some happy. it really is a sort of rollercoater book. Its like you want to tell her just move on and be happy but when you think about it how could you even bare to wakeup in the morning knowing the love of your life has passed on and theres no getting them back? I say READ this book! I did have it moments when your like "Really?! again? your confused again!? but when she begins explaining why shes confused well then it all makes sense lol.
Let me know if any of you have read this or if you plan on it :)

Helen Fielding

So I sort of got these books on a whim. I remember seeing previews for this movie and to be 100% honest I’m not the biggest fan of British humor. But I though what the hey
So this review is going to be on BOTH of the books. Right off the back 3 stars (and I feel generous) Bridget Jones sounds like a typical girl in some ways…never happy with her looks, has great friends and family who also are crazy. She falls in lust and in love. She goes through heartbreak and good times. BUT it sort of lagged on…like blah blah blah just get to the point already! I would NOT recommend these books. It was a waste for me; I already took them off my bookshelf and might mosey on to Half Price books to donate. I rarely and I mean RARELY say this, but Bridget Jone’s Diary the FILM was better than the novel! Now Bridget Jones; the Edge of Reason well some parts of that book were better but it was all just kind of loopy and extra out of the ordinary. So short review I would say skip these two! Has anybody else read these? Suggestions? Comments? <3

The Messenger by Mayra Montero

Photobucket
Well let me say it right away:
I HATE THIS BOOK! Gah OMG like really? Really lady?! This was your best? *vomit*
This is a Spanish book translated into English, I have NO idea if that has anything to do with it.
Okay, it takes place in Havana Cuba in the 1920's so it has all this like witch craft "curandero" type of stuff and this half Cuban half Chinese chick who's godfather can like read the air and it will tell him whats going to happen in the future blah blah blah she hooks up with this married dude they have a kid his wife kills herself then he and their kid die she cries a little moves on meets this Italian guy he goes with her blah blah she remind him of some chic who used to breast feed him (YUK) they do it blah blah

Out of 218 pages I got to page 75 in like 2 weeks. Horrible I know. Not even half...I tried real hard to read as much as I could but I was like "umm I'd rather clean/cook/sleep/watch TV" than read this book. So I felt it was a waste of time and am now letting the world know lol

I give it 1.2 stars just cause of the creativity. If anybody wants to give this book a whirl please email me at vansmakeupride@gmail.com with your address, if not I'm giving this to goodwill

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

Photobucket
So I was a bit hesitant to read this book. I mean for one the beginning takes place in Afghanistan in like the 1970's. Would I EVER relate to that? of course not. But I gave it a chance and OH MY GAWD everybody and their moma has to read this now... It is one of those "hard to swallow" type of stories.. I had to put it down from time to time because it really was too had to bare at time, it made me sad and made me cry as well. It's about a rich afgan boy (Amir) and his story with his best friend and loyal servant (Hassan) Amir moves to America and like 20+ years later goes back to the middle east because he is told to. .....sounds lame but trust me its not!

NOTES AFTER READING:
Hossein is not one to sugar coat his stories. If you try to skim through the chapters you are going to miss something very important. And even though the story is so raw it will fill you up with emotion (that's when I had to put it down) but you have to know what happens next so you take a deep breath and keep reading. I had a mix of emotions for Amir the main character. At first I thought this kid is great he is friends with his servant Hassan, I mean what a great guy right? Well that is until the climax of the story. The part that changes EVERYTHING. Gawd did he piss me off it was hard to forgive him after that. I also expected him to throw himself at the chance to save Sohrab but noo he was forced. He was such a disappointment, but that just made me want the best for little Sohrab.

TIPS WHILE READING:
Try to remember every bodies name through out the story each name is as important as the next. And will all pretty much come up.

NOVEL VS FILM:
Photobucket
Movie ssssssuuuuuuxxxxxxxxxx gawd that movie sucked I mean I understand that not everything that is in a 400 page book can fit in an hour and a half movie but geez seriously?! If I was just watching the movie I would be so confused and lost after like 30 mins! They don't explain and they miss out a lot.. so if you have seen the movie before the book don't let it discourage you from great literature.

Vanessa gives this book 5 stars!

Sex and the City by Candace Bushnell

Add VideoI got this book for my Birthday from the beautiful, Mel, a beauty blogger HERE.
So the book? LOVED IT! Its nothing like the movie, since this was published back in the 90's. Yes. S&C is from the 90's ladies. lol

BUT it is a lot like the episodes! Pretty random crazy stuff.

For me, 95% UNrelatable. Why?
1. I'm not rich.
2. Not from NY or even been to NY
3. I'm not in my 30's.
4. I don't sleep around.
5. I don't do drugs.
6. I rarely drink.
etc. etc.
BUT that is what I loved about this book, I have no idea what this is about so its a total adventure! lol

Every chapter is about a different subject like; lesbians, threesomes, marriage, kids, s&m, drugs, men, women, bitches, losers etc.
And each chapter has sub-chapters dealing with the same subject.
Just like in the episodes, some characters are only mentioned once, some through out.

But unlike the episodes, its not a narrative by Carrie...actually come to think i cant even think whose the narrator, but Carrie & Mr.Big are big characters later on in the book :)

I say READ IT! If you love the episodes your gong to LOVE the book! If you love the movie, you MIGHT like the book. Most Sex & the City fans know the movie was not like the show.

LMK if you read it, or are planning on :)

The Rum Diary by Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

Photobucket
So I JUST read this book and hmm I'm not sure how I feel about it.

It is an exciting story to say the least, Paul Kemp is a journalist who has been writing in New York and Europe and has now found himself writing for the only English newspaper in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
White boy in Puerto Rico, yes it means exotic places and people for the guy.
#1 He likes to drink .... A LOT.. hints why its the RUM diary.
#2 The people he meets (other Americans) are effin crazy! Drunks, Pervs, Angry and even abusers!
#3 Apparently people who come from the good 'Ol U.S of A don't really stay to long in Puerto Rico, the natives don't care much for them or their lame newspaper, they are quiet violent toward them as well.
#4 There is quiet a lot of adventure i suppose? Its like he doesn't do much, but so much happens lol
#5 The ending = lame!!! I thought it would have been cooler if he got rich, died, or ran off w this one chic he has been digging since like page 2.

I give it 3.5 stars for making me want to know what happens next.... but the ending was a total loss, in my opinions of course.

*This will be made in to a movie w Johnny Depp playing the role of none other than Paul Kemp*
Dr. Hunter S. Thompson is an amazing writer none the less, I felt like Paul Kemp was a real guy and these were truly his feelings. I could almost hear him telling me his story, and wanting to know what happens in the next chapter, and the next and the next....
I say if you find this on sale or at some used book store grab it! If your a Depp fan, read it and compare to the movie :)

Elsewhere By Gabrielle Zevin

Photobucket
I must say right now. I LOVED this book! I give it 4.5 happy faces for me!

What is it about?
Well, its about this teenage girl names Liz, who had an accident and died.
Sounds like the end of the story right? ha! WRONG!
Well, Liz wakes up on a ship and doesn't know she died or where the hell shes going...
GET THIS!
Shes going where ...all the dead people go.. heaven? No! hell? NO!
Well I don't wanna give it ALL out! BUT its pretty much where you go/what happens AFTER you die...
It is NOT some religious, nor spiritual kind of story either!

So yup.. its the story of Liz's umm life? after death lol! It has the people in her life/death and how she "grows up". (you'll get it once you read it hehe)

ps. the animals talk. yes i said TALK. but only some poeple know the language and of course Liz is one of them "aweeee"

Its pretty fast passed so don't skip a chapter and although she is a teenager (that means shes annoying and whiny at times) the character grows on you :)
